Why It Is So Important to Follow Your Dreams

What career did you aspire to as a child? Was it the job you’re currently doing? If so, absolutely incredible for you. However, for the other 99% of you reading this blog – what changed? Was the dream unrealistic? Did you deem the money to be insufficient?

Whatever it is, for some reason, most of us abandon our childhood dreams. As our candor fades so do our lofty aspirations. Our dreams of doing something we love and helping others in the process slowly change into somewhat artificial dreams of a career that will provide us with artificial security (i.e. money). The reality is this, we give up our dreams because the status quo of our society makes someone who wants to travel the world for a living feel like a lazy person looking for a scapegoat from the real world. We give up our dreams because the status quo dictates you’re not happy if you’re not making 6 or 7 figures.

When greed gets in the way of our dreams and compromises our integrity, we fall captive to money. We are constantly surrounded by advertisements, billboards, commercials, social media posts, movies, TV shows, etc. that make one feel inadequate. We see the fancy car and feel bad about our Honda Civic. We see the rumors for iPhone 7 and start to get anxious, because God forbid we be 1 generation out of touch with technology that changes more rapidly than the weather on a tropical island. We see the massive houses filled with so much unnecessary shit and for some reason hold onto that as our idea of success.

Well let’s set something straight. “Things” do not make one successful. A certain digit in a bank account does not make one successful. And that is not an opinion….that’s a fact. If things and money are your measurement for success, you simply can’t attain success. And you know why? Because it’s never enough!

We have always understood that life is fleeting, but the recent and unexpected passing of Michael’s mother emphasized that point in a whole new light. When our time is finished, we want to look back on life and smile at the memories, laugh about to challenges, and be at peace with the decisions we made. Regret is not something either of us have ever lived with, nor is it something we plan to face in the future. And you know why, because we live every day like it could be our last.

Heck, we quit our great jobs to travel the world. Follow your dreams! You have to JUMP! You have to follow your heart. You have to do what you love. Identify your gift and use it.

There aren’t many things in American life that can be deemed more irresponsible by the masses. But you know what? It was one of the best decisions we have ever made and was absolutely the most life changing experience we have ever had. We built this blog from the ground up to help support our dream of traveling the world. Along the way we have had incredible opportunities to share our stories and help others by providing travel guidance and advice. Few things are more rewarding than doing what you love and helping others in the process.

If you’re questioning your dreams, your goals, and quite generally what you want to do with life, watch this video below. If you’re in a job you hate or heading down a career path you don’t love, you’ll definitely appareciate the content put forth by Alan Watts.

So what really are your goals in life? What do you want to do? Alan put it incredible well when he said,

“If you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you’ll spend your life completely wasting your time. You’ll be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing thing you don’t like doing, which is stupid.”

Think about what you want in life and seize it. For us, it is travel. For you it might be a job in finance, or medicine, or perhaps you want to go to law school and become an attorney. There really is no wrong choice. The only wrong choice is choosing to silence your dreams by becoming a slave to money and ultimately creating a life you’re less than satisfied with.
