Best Places to Propose

couples_coordinates_romantic_things_to_do_in_positano

Considering yesterday was the anniversary of our wonderful engagement in Positano, we thought we would share a list of some places we have traveled to that would have also been amazing choices for a proposal. Along our journey, we have been fortunate enough to have seen some of the most beautiful, historic, and moving places on earth; all of which could qualify as being some of the best places to propose on the planet. Here are some of the places that we think would make for a perfect proposal for you and your partner.

Best Places to Propose

Positano, Italy

Is this one biased at all? Well, considering that the beach in Positano is where we got engaged, our opinion might be a bit slighted. Positano’s beauty is surpassed only by her charm. The town is what one considers when pondering quintessential Italian coastal towns. Colorful buildings lining the cliffs up to the sea. Check. Beautiful sky high, green mountains enveloping the town. Check. Gorgeous pebble stone beaches filled with colorful umbrellas. Check. And a town filled with welcoming locals who make some of the most delicious food you can find anywhere in the world. Check. Take it from us, Positano is an amazing choice.

*Side note: If you need to hire a photographer to capture your moment in Positano, we used Foto Aminta. They’ve been serving the Amalfi Coast for over 50 years.

Machu Picchu, Peru

This ancient Incan site in the clouds is a naturally romantic and awe inspiring location. We have seen a number of proposal pictures on Instagram from this exact spot. The whole “Machu Picchu experience” elevates the level of intimacy between one and his or her partner. It is a crazy combination of intense physical challenge (if you’re hiking), breathtaking beauty, and deep history.

Maya Beach, Koh Phi Phi, Thailand

If it is a good enough for Leonardo DiCaprio to use as a movie where the destination is meant to be “perfect,” then it is definitely good enough for your proposal. The island that is home to Maya beach is due south of Koh Phi Phi. If you’re staying on Koh Phi Phi, you can simply hire a wooden longtail boat for a 3 – 4-hour tour and you should expect to pay no more than 2000 hai Baht. We got a 3-hour tour for 1500 THB.

London, England

London has a certain charm about her that is almost indescribable. Through the sarcastic humor and cloudy skies, the city exhibits a sense of strength and unity that is akin to that of NYC following 9/11. Except this seems to always be the case.

The city, herself, is an outdoor walking museum. You’d likely find it impossible to walk down the street in London and not pass a historical site screaming with rich history. Places like the London Eye and some of the rooftop spots near the river provide beautiful views of Westminster Abbey and Big Ben; perfect for your proposal.

Read our London Travel Guide for suggestions on where to stay, what to eat, and what to do while you’re in London with your partner.

Aruba

Aruba, Jamaica, girl I wanna take ya. Bermuda, Bahamas, come on pretty mama! Aruba is simply one of the most beautiful destinations, in the Caribbean. Aruba is enveloped by beautiful white sand beaches, natural pools (as pictured above). The water is dreamy and the weather is generally always perfect (barring a storm).

Check out our blog highlighting the Best Beaches in Aruba and perhaps you’ll find a great spot for your proposal!

Dubrovnik, Croatia

This one is especially for your Game of Thrones fans out there. Dubrovnik, as most of Croatia, is gorgeous. What better place to propose than King’s Landing?

Here is our Croatia Travel Guide.

Prague Castle, Prague, Czechia

Czechia? Yeah, Czech Republic has adopted a short, official, geographic name. Similar to how we call The French Republic, France, we will now know the Czech Republic as Czechia. If you don’t know, now you know. (Please tell us you read that in a Biggie voice?).

Prague Castle is one of those pieces of architectures that leaves one speechless. We couldn’t exclude it from this list, as it was littered with couples taking romantic photos, and even one doing a wedding shoot in their dress and tux.

Our Prague Travel Guide includes information about Prague Castle and much more for your trip to Prague.

Vinales, Cuba

The tobacco country of Cuba is a romantic paradise. Lush greenery is properly juxtaposed next to some of the most unique mountains we have found anywhere in the world.

One thing to keep in mind, however, as Americans is that Trump has reverted Cuban relations to pre-Obama era. Direct flights from the US are no longer going to be available. You can still, however, fly through Mexico quite easily. Check from flights through Mexico DF.

Horseshoe Bend, Page, Arizona, United States

Horseshoe Bend is commonly confused with the Grand Canyon. In complete honesty, we thought it was part of the Grand Canyon when we visited. Let’s be fair – the Colorado River runs through the Canyon and Horseshoe Bend is just a few miles outside of the Grand Canyon National Park.

Semantics aside, this place is awe-inspiring. Few places that we have visited have humbled us like Horseshoe Bend. Get here for sunrise or sunset for the best light…it can get quite bright during the day.

I visited the Grand Canyon with my parents when I was (maybe) 6 years old. For some reason, my father planned for us to spend a week here. And no, we didn’t white water raft, hike, take a donkey ride, or do any other activities that would seemingly fill a week at the Grand Canyon. We just went to the lookout and checked out the Grand Canyon each day. Without fail, every morning, my father would wake up before dawn and go watch the sun rise over this masterpiece. This was perplexing to me for 2 reasons: 1) Why would you want to stare at a hole in the ground for more than maybe an hour? Sure, I found it breathtaking, but after a day or 2 I was ready for something new (again, I was 6). 2) Why in the world would anyone in his or her sane mind wake up for sunrise every morning on vacation? As a child it is so much more challenging for us to appreciate simple things like this. After spending the last couple days here at the Grand Canyon with @alexandra_carson, I get it. It took 20 years, but I get it. With age comes wisdom, and with wisdom comes peace and presence. I honestly feel like I could sit here and stare at this hole in the ground for the next week. Thanks for the example and for the lessons you didn’t even know you taught me, Dad. Love you and miss you!

Uluwatu Temple, Bali, Indonesia

The temple has almost nothing to do with this being a great proposal spot. The views, the cliffs, the sunset/sunrise potential, and the lush greenery make this a great proposal spot. These sheer cliffs drop straight to gorgeous, crystal clear, blue water with surging waves (depending on the time of year). The whole island of Bali has a sense of magic about it. This should elevate your proposal to another level.

Oia, Santorini, Greece

Oia is simply breathtaking. For those of you who want a destination proposal or wedding, or perhaps need honeymoon ideas that don’t involve tropical destinations, look no further than Santorini. Your engagement (or wedding/honeymoon) will be greatly elevated by the food, the people, and the gorgeous views from atop the island.

Yosemite, California, United States

Yosemite is like the real life Garden of Eden. This place is one of the most naturally beautiful places anywhere in the world. That is not an opinion. That is a fact. This place has been photographed to the max by professional photographers since the camera was first invented. Throughout the park you’ll find mountains, cliffs, waterfalls, rivers, trees, wild animals, green pastures, lakes, and so much more. There isn’t a part of this park that won’t take your breath away.

YOUR SPOT

Whatever it is that is “your spot” as a couple. This could be the place you met, where you had your first date, where you shared your first kiss, etc. Although we got engaged on the beach in Positano, the backup plan was going to be “our spot” in Florence, Italy (pictured above). Whenever we are in Florence we spend our evenings here eating pizza and gelato while watching the sunset.
